In the 60's, Myra Hindley and lover Ian Brady abducted and murdered several small children in and around Manchester. They buried several bodies on Saddleworth Moor, north of Manchester; when they were found out, the case became known as the Moors Murders. Steven Patrick Morrissey was the same age as several of the victims, like Lesley Anne Downey and John Kilbride. In interviews years later, he revealed the deep impression the murders had left on him as a child - a feeling of an intense malevolent spirit around Manchester that never really left him.
Months after the release of "The Smiths", a relative of the murdered John Kilbride heard this song on a jukebox in a pub. Incensed by what he saw as a taking advantage of the murders, a chance hearing caused yet another scandal to hinder the rising career of The Smiths. After several communications from Morrissey himself, the relatives soon realised the sincerity of the song.

In its early stages, this song was titled "Over The Moors". This song was only played live once, at The Smiths' first gig, The Ritz, 4th October 1982.

"Suffer the little children" is a phrase from the New Testament, specifically Matthew 19:14 and Mark 10:14, where Jesus says, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven." and "Suffer the little children and forbid them not to come unto me: for of such is the heaven kingdom.". The phrase essentially means to allow or permit children to approach Jesus, and not to stop them. It's a reminder that children are valued in God's kingdom and should be welcomed.
Biblical Context: The story in the Gospels involves parents bringing their children to Jesus for blessing. The disciples, who were concerned about being busy, tried to discourage them. Jesus then intervened, telling them to allow the children to come to him.
The phrase "suffer the little children" uses an older meaning of the word "suffer," which means "to allow" or "permit". Jesus was telling his followers to allow the children to come to him without being hindered or prevented.
The verse emphasizes the importance of children in the kingdom of God. Jesus's words suggest that the kingdom of God is for those who are simple and humble, like children.

Durante i suoi primi passi, la canzone era intitolata "Over The Moors" e fu suonata dal vivo una sola volta alla prima esibizione degli Smiths, al Ritz il 4 ottobre 1982.

“Lasciate andare i bambini (perché vengano a me)” è una frase tratta dal Nuovo Testamento, precisamente da Matteo 19:14 e Marco 10:14, dove Gesù dice: “Lasciate che i bambini vengano a me e non glielo impedite, perché a loro appartiene il regno dei cieli”. La frase significa essenzialmente consentire o permettere ai bambini di avvicinarsi a Gesù senza  impedirglielo.
