The song was inspired by Shelagh Delaney's A Taste Of Honey (the film adaptation of the play being a Morrissey favourite). In Morrissey's own words: "I've never made any secret of the fact that at least 50 per cent of my reason for writing can be blamed on Shelagh Delaney, who wrote A Taste Of Honey, and 'This Night Has Opened My Eyes' is a Taste Of Honey song - putting the entire play to words." The dilemma of Jo (the protagonist in A Taste Of Honey) whether to retain her unwanted pregnancy, as described in Act II, is the central theme of the lyrics, with Morrissey borrowing entire quotes from Shelagh Delaney's play. 1 The News of the World is a British tabloid newspaper published every Sunday. It can be considered the Sunday equivalent of The Sun. The newspaper tends to concentrate on celebrity-based scoops and populist news.

La canzone è stata ispirata al dramma A Taste Of Honey di Shelagh Delaney (l'adattamento cinematografico dell'opera è uno dei preferiti di Morrissey).
