Morrissey admitted this song was written 'about somebody I know in relation to their treatment toward me.' It seems quite evident that 'somebody' had betrayed the singer's confidence. 'It is a lack of trust' said Morrissey about his problems of forming close friendships. 'I'm simply waiting for people to do something damaging. And they inevitably do.' Trying to identify the friend quoted by the lyrics is clearly a hard thing to do, although usual speculations include the ex-Smiths friends. Morrissey ha ammesso che la canzone è stata scritta 'su qualcuno che conosco in relazione al suo comportamento verso di me.'
