Wor(l)d of Morrissey
We're back! Welcome to the world of Morrissey's lyrics.

This site and all of the work made to keep it updated during the last 25 years are dedicated to my beloved friend MaCa65 who suddenly left this lonely planet
and me without words. Throughout the short stretch of time that we have been given to spend together as close friends, we shared many things,
thoughts, passions and some bits of Life. Back in 1983, together we discovered a band called The Smiths and together since then, we followed Morrissey's career
as one of the most influential and inspiring singer/artist/poet of our age. Maca65 has always been a strong supporter since when I first launched WoM,
so this is and will always be entirely for you, my friend. -- David

Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others

From the ice-age to the dole-age
there is but one concern
I have just discovered

Some girls are bigger than others
some girls are bigger than others
some girls' mothers are bigger than other girls' mothers

As Antony said to Cleopatra
as he opened a crate of ale
oh I say

Some girls are bigger than others
some girls are bigger than others
some girls' mothers are bigger than other girls' mothers

[On the shopfloor
There's a calendar
As obvious as snow
As if we didn't know..]

Send me the pillow
The one that you dream on
Send me the pillow
The one that you dream on
And I'll send you mine...

The Anthony and Cleopatra referred to seem to be taken from the classic "Carry on Cleo". The coda is in part borrowed from Johnny Tillotson's 1962 hit "Send Me The Pillow You Dream On".

The chorus means exactly what you think it means. Morrissey said that for years he had never realised that, um, some girls are bigger than others. That is all that one can say about girls, the lyrics ironically suggest. Evidently enough, he did not look at them too much. As Morrissey explains: "I do want to write about women. The whole idea of womanhood is something that to me is largely unexplored. I'm realising things about women that I never realised before and 'Some Girls...' is just taking it down to the basic absurdity of recognising the contours one's body. The fact that I've scuttled through 26 years of life without ever noticing that the contours of the body are different is an outrageous farce!"

The live version often had an extra verse, a bit obscure, to wit: [On the shopfloor There's a calendar
As obvious as snow
As if we didn't know..]

It is not known if the curious fade in/out at the start of the song has been created on purpose. Sound engineers and producers often "spoil" mixes they send to record companies so they cannot be used. The most common way of doing this is by whacking the faders down to just below half (to throw to haywire the noise reduction systems) within the first 30 seconds - just as in "Some Girls". It means the client gets a good idea of the mix but also something totally unreleasable. Normally this is done to ensure payment for a track. My only guess is that production on all aspects of TQID was so behind schedule, and Rough Trade were in such a hurry to get it out, they didn't bother to check the master too thoroughly.

This theory however was denied by "The Queen Is Dead" producer Stephen Street, who admitted he created the unusual effect on purpose: "The effect was supposed to be like the music's in a hall somewhere, it goes away, then it comes back and it's nice and clean and dry. A bit like opening a door, closing it, then opening it again and walking in".

Certe ragazze sono pił grandi di altre

Dall'era glaciale fino all'era della disoccupazione
Non c'è che una sola preoccupazione
Io l'ho appena scoperta

Come Antonio disse a Cleopatra
mentre apriva una cassa di birra
Oh, anch'io dico:

Me The Pillow You Dream On".
