Wor(l)d of Morrissey
We're back! Welcome to the world of Morrissey's lyrics.

This site and all of the work made to keep it updated during the last 25 years are dedicated to my beloved friend MaCa65 who suddenly left this lonely planet
and me without words. Throughout the short stretch of time that we have been given to spend together as close friends, we shared many things,
thoughts, passions and some bits of Life. Back in 1983, together we discovered a band called The Smiths and together since then, we followed Morrissey's career
as one of the most influential and inspiring singer/artist/poet of our age. Maca65 has always been a strong supporter since when I first launched WoM,
so this is and will always be entirely for you, my friend. -- David

I Don't Owe You Anything

Bought on stolen wine
A nod was the first step
You knew very well
What was coming next

Did I really walk all this way
Just to hear you say
"Oh I don't want to go out tonight"
"Oh I don't want to go out tonight"
Oh but you will
For you must

I don't owe you anything
But you owe me something
Repay me now

You should never go to them
Let them come to you
Just like I do
Just like I do

But did I really walk all this way
Just to hear you say
"Oh I don't want to go out tonight"
"Oh I don't want to go out tonight"
But you will
For you must

I don't owe you anything
But you owe me something
Repay me now

Too freely on your lips
Words prematurely sad
Oh but I know what will make you smile tonight
Life is never kind
Life is never kind
Oh but I know what will make you smile tonight

Yet another failed or at best sordid relationship in a working class low-life context is introduced with these lyrics.

The earlier version lasted 7 minutes, partially because Morrissey had an extra end verse to sing. This part was eventually discarded in the final album version. The additional lyrics contained:

"the rude girl that you have known"

and the conclusion was:

"how I want to forget tonight
and I will
as will you"

Even without this explicit extra verse, the lyrics hint a bleak and dull liaison or just simple maybe heterosexual advances (here pairing up with "Pretty Girls Make Graves").

"I don't owe you a thing" says the character Jo in Act I of Shelagh Delaney's novel A taste of honey.

Io non ti devo nulla

Comprato con del vino rubato
Un gesto è stato il primo passo
Tu sapevi perfettamente
Quello che sarebbe seguito

Ho fatto davvero tutta questa strada
Solo per sentirti dire
"Oh non mi va di uscire stasera"
"Oh non mi va di uscire stasera"
Oh, ma tu verrai
Perché devi

Io non ti devo nulla
Ma tu mi devi qualcosa
Ripagami adesso

Non dovresti mai andare tu da loro
Lascia che siano loro a venire da te
Come faccio io
Come faccio io

Ma davvero ho fatto tutta questa strada
Solo per sentirti dire
"Oh non mi va di uscire stasera"
"Oh non mi va di uscire stasera"
Oh, ma tu verrai
Perché devi

Io non ti devo nulla
Ma tu mi devi qualcosa
Ripagami adesso

Con troppa libertà sulle tue labbra
Parole affrettatamente tristi

"The rude girl that you have known"

("La ragazza sgarbata che hai conosciuto")

e la conclusione era:

"How I want to forget tonight
and I will
as will you"
