Wor(l)d of Morrissey
We're back! Welcome to the world of Morrissey's lyrics.

This site and all of the work made to keep it updated during the last 25 years are dedicated to my beloved friend MaCa65 who suddenly left this lonely planet
and me without words. Throughout the short stretch of time that we have been given to spend together as close friends, we shared many things,
thoughts, passions and some bits of Life. Back in 1983, together we discovered a band called The Smiths and together since then, we followed Morrissey's career
as one of the most influential and inspiring singer/artist/poet of our age. Maca65 has always been a strong supporter since when I first launched WoM,
so this is and will always be entirely for you, my friend. -- David

Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want

Good times for a change
See the luck I've had
Could make a good man turn bad

So please, please, please
Let me, let me, let me
Let me get what I want
This time

Haven't had a dream in a long time
See the life I've had
Could make a good man bad

So for once in my life
Let me get what I want
Lord knows it would be the first time
Lord knows it would be the first time

The essence of pure Morrissey & Marr composing ability, in just 110 seconds, with the last 40 seconds instrumental only. Morrissey recalls: "When we first played it to Rough Trade, they kept asking: 'Where is the rest of the song?'. But to me it's like a very brief punch in the face. Lengthening the song would, to my mind, have simply been explaining the blindingly obvious."

The lyrics are quite simple and effective at the same time indeed: a typical Morrissey lament, a plea for living a better life and coming out of the shell he himself has closed in. The inspiration could well be the autobiographical reference to his own desire of forming a pop band. In 1984 Morrissey had just realized his own dream to be part of the music industry the way he had been dreaming for years.

This track is one of the most famous, best-loved and most frequently covered Smiths compositions. It also has been used several times on movie soundtracks, TV advertising, etc.

To be noticed musically the vacillating mandolin coda (played by John Porter, not by Johnny Marr) and the unique finale with the trembling of the last note towards the oblivion. Johnny Marr later revealed his source of inspiration for the tune: an obscure Burt Bacharach composition called 'The Answer To Everything', originally recorded by Del Shannon in 1962: "It was something my parents used to play and it struck a chord in me because it sounded so familiar. I tried to capture the essence of that tune, its specimen and sense of yearning".

Ti prego, lasciami avere quello che voglio

Il momento propizio per un cambiamento
Guarda la fortuna che ho avuto
Farebbe diventare cattivo un uomo buono

Allora, ti prego, ti prego, ti prego
Lasciami, lasciami, lasciami
