Wor(l)d of Morrissey
We're back! Welcome to the world of Morrissey's lyrics.

This site and all of the work made to keep it updated during the last 25 years are dedicated to my beloved friend MaCa65 who suddenly left this lonely planet
and me without words. Throughout the short stretch of time that we have been given to spend together as close friends, we shared many things,
thoughts, passions and some bits of Life. Back in 1983, together we discovered a band called The Smiths and together since then, we followed Morrissey's career
as one of the most influential and inspiring singer/artist/poet of our age. Maca65 has always been a strong supporter since when I first launched WoM,
so this is and will always be entirely for you, my friend. -- David

Sheila, Take A Bow

Is it wrong to want to live on your own?
No, it's not wrong but I must know
How can someone so young
Sing words so sad?
Sheila take a, Sheila take a bow
Boot the grime of this world in the crotch, dear
And don't go home tonight
Come out and find the one that you love
And who loves you
The one that you love and who loves you

Is it wrong not to always be glad?
No, it's not wrong but I must add
How can someone so young
Sing words so sad?
Sheila take a, Sheila take a bow
Boot the grime of this world in the crotch, dear
And don't go home tonight
Come out and find the one that you love
And who loves you
The one that you love and who loves you

Take my hand and off we stride
You're a girl and I'm a boy
Take my hand and off we stride
I'm a girl and you're a boy
Sheila take a, Sheila take a bow
Throw your homework onto the fire
Come out and find the one that you love
Come out and find the one you love

A catchy single with a fine effort from Marr. Morrissey sings of juvenile depression and angst whilst Marr plays one of his better middle-era songs. As ever, Morrissey adds a dash of gender-confusion towards the end of the song, before purposefully cutting off the last line (surely to imply that the one she loves doesn't really love her).

Morrissey's choice to use a specific gender in this song is interesting. Although more flippant than his previous gender-free songs, it is still fairly unusual for a Smiths lyric to be so specific. Unusually, the prime plagiarists Morrissey and Marr borrow from the same source, with Marr lifting parts of the melody and Morrissey the line "If the homework brings you down, then we'll throw it onto the fire" from David Bowie's 1971 track "Kooks".

The whole song is an obvious homage to Salford-born playwright Shelagh Delaney (Sheila, the Christian name is used here instead of the Gaelic Shelagh).

The cover star of this single was Candy Darling, a Andy Warhol's superstar transexual with Morrissey commenting his choice: "To be able to inflict Candy Darling on the record buying public was a perfect example of my very dangerous sense of humour".

Sheila, fa' un inchino

E' sbagliato voler vivere per conto proprio?
No, non lo è ma devo sapere
Come può uno così giovane
Cantare parole tanto tristi?

Cantare parole tanto tristi?

Morrissey e Marr prendono a prestito entrambi dalla stessa fonte, con Marr che ruba parti della melodia e Morrissey il verso "If the homework brings you down, then we'll throw it onto the fire" dal brano del 1971 "Kooks" di David Bowie.
