One of Morrissey's best-loved, most mis-interpreted, and hence most controversial tunes. Critics have a ridiculous tendency to selectively quote and here's a fine example. Never mind the surrounding context, the critics can just pick out "we are the last truly British people you'll ever know" and thereby prove Morrissey's obvious xenophobia. Morrissey's ambivalent attitude towards the hooligans is a struggle between the cowardice of the people ("we will descend on anyone unable to defend themselves") and his beloved notion of a Lost Britain embodied in the fierce "patriotism" of the hooligans.

As he says: "I understand the level of patriotism, the level of frustration and the level of jubilance. I understand the overall character. I understand their agression and I understand why it must be released... when I see reports on the television about hooliganism in Sweden and Denmark or somewhere I'm actually amused... as long as people don't die, I am amused."

Finally at the end, the British character is revealed as someone "you'll never want to know". Seemingly intentionally tempting fate, this line is spoken half-obscured at the end of the song.

² Your Arsenal: at least three different meanings for the album title. "Your arsenal" figuratively as the amount of ammunition ready to blow, the potential - why not? even sexual - of an imaginary interlocutor. "Your Arsenal" as the famous London football team, whose supporters (who speak in this song as right-wing hooligans) believe they are the real and last British people. "Your arsenal" also as a pun on the expression "Your arse 'n all" later confirmed by a Morrissey picture taken by Jake Walters where the naked bottom appear with the same phrase.

Una delle canzoni più amate, più travisate e più controverse. La critica ha spesso la ridicola tendenza di citare selettivamente e questo è un esempio tipico. Senza considerare il contesto circostante, i critici evidenziano "we are the last truly British people you'll ever know" e dimostrano così le accuse di xenofobia verso Morrissey. Qui è evidente che a parlare sono i tifosi di calcio (i famosi "hooligans") inglesi, forse quelli dell'Arsenal, conosciuti per la loro cattiveria.

L'atteggiamento di Morrissey nei confronti di costoro è ambivalente e volutamente ambiguo. E' una lotta fra la vigliaccheria degli hooligans ("assaliremo chiunque non sia in grado di difendersi da solo") e l'amato ideale di una Inghilterra perduta, impersonata dal feroce "patriottismo" dei tifosi violenti.

Come lui stesso ci dice: "Comprendo il livello di patriottismo, il livello di frustrazione e quello di esultanza. Comprendo il personaggio nell'insieme. Comprendo la loro aggressività e perché debba essere liberata... Quando vedo in TV i servizi sul teppismo calcistico in Svezia e Danimarca o altrove, a dire il vero mi diverto... sempre che non vi siano morti, la cosa mi diverte."

Alla fine del brano (e del testo) i personaggi che si vantano di essere fra i pochi veri britannici rimasti vengono rivelati come qualcuno che "non vorrete mai conoscere". Come a dire, probabilmente è vero che loro sono gli ultimi ad avvertire quel "patriottismo" verso la "Vecchia Inghilterra" tanto amata da Morrissey, ma è anche vero che si tratta di gente assolutamente da evitare.

¹ turnstiles: lett. i tornelli, speciali cancelli posti all'ingresso dello stadio, usati per regolare l'accesso all'interno e a volte per contare il numero delle persone che li attraversano.

² Your Arsenal: almeno tre significati per il titolo dell'album. "Il tuo arsenale" in senso figurativo per intendere gli argomenti/munizioni da sparare, il potenziale - perché no? anche sessuale - di un immaginario interlocutore. "Il vostro Arsenal" per indicare la famosa squadra di calcio londinese i cui tifosi, che sembrano parlare nel testo da gente di estrema destra, si ritengono i veri e ultimi britannici. Per una mente come quella del nostro autore, il gioco di parole "your arse 'n all" in seguito confermato da una foto di Morrissey scattata da Jake Walters in cui il fondoschiena del Nostro appare nudo con la stessa scritta in bella mostra.
