About this song Johnny Marr recalls: "That song came out of me and Morrissey's love of Bob & Marcia's 'Young, Gifted And Black'. We both absolutely adored it. So Girlfriend In A Coma was trying to capture the spirit of that. If you listen to the string parts on both you can maybe see it." The scenario shows a hospital-ridden girl after a ghastly accident with sarcastic comments from the protagonist, his boyfriend. The end is the most dramatic moment of the song with Morrissey saying 'My, my... my baby' and preparing for the dreaded 'last goodbyes'. 1 In the early drafts the line was: 'there were times when I could have cheerfully strangled her' 2 First drafts contained 'with tears in my eyes I ask you!' 3 this little word wasn't noticed by most Morrissey's lyrics researchers!
