La storia d'amore di Morrissey con la città di Roma è un qualcosa di cui lui stesso è troppo felice per parlare. In una intervista al Daily Record, spiega perché ha scelto Roma per vivere e per registrare il suo nuovo album. Utilizzando nel brano "The Youngest Was The Most Loved" il suono di un'ambulanza fra le strade affollate di Roma, Morrissey ammette che il suo amore per la città è sparso in tutto l'album. "Nessun'altra città al mondo ha dei suoni come Roma di notte. Stavamo tornando dallo studio una notte quando qualcuno ha gridato 'eccellente'. Ci è piaciuto così tanto il suono di quella voce che abbiamo voluto registrarlo." Morrissey aggiunge: "Non ho scelto io Roma, Roma ha scelto me. Lo scorso gennaio ho visitato la città e ne sono stato completamente rapito, la gente, lo stile, il sole, l'architettura, i vestiti e la gioia che le persone provano nella semplice esistenza. Non rimangono a casa, escono e la vita scorre ovunque. Sono stato così travolto che ho deciso di restare."
Morrissey's love affair with Rome - part one
Morrissey's love affair with the city of Rome is something he's only too happy to talk about. He explainis why he chose Rome as a place to live and record his new album. Using the sound of an ambulance shooting through Rome's busy streets on "The Youngest Was The Most Loved", he admits his love for the city is all over the album. "No other city in the world sounds like Rome at night. We were walking from the studio one night when someone shouted 'eccellente'. We had to record it. It sounded so good." He adds: "I didn't choose Rome, Rome chose me. Last January I visited the city and was completely taken by it, the people, the style, the sun, the architecture, the clothes and the joy the people had in simply existing. They don't stay indoors. They go out and life exists everywhere. I was so swept away that I decided to stay."

In "Dear God Please Help Me", Morrissey dice di essere stato ispirato mentre camminava in una via nei pressi del Vaticano. "Non si può essere a Roma ed ignorare la presenza della religione, è davvero imponente. Ma ho avvertito che camminavo per le strade, il mio cuore era sulle corde ed ero pronto ad amare tutti e tutto. Questa è la canzone. Ho avuto la sensazione di liberarmi di tutte le restrizioni auto-imposte." Morrissey aggiunge: "Sono stato a Los Angeles per sette anni, è una città spaventosa. La gente è molto attenta a quello che fa. Non puoi andare sereno per le strade della città, non puoi camminare fra la gente. E' una città molto strutturata. Qui a Roma invece ero in mezzo alla gente, in un turbine di emozioni sincere. Alcune nottate sono molto trafficate, ma altre sono vuote ed è molto sicuro."
Morrissey's love affair with Rome - Part two
In the album track "Dear God Please Help Me", Morrissey was inspired in a way by the Vatican. "You can't be here and be unaware of the presence of religion, it's very imposing. But I felt that I was walking in the streets, my heart was on a string, and I was ready to love everybody and everything. That's the song. I had this feeling of getting rid of self-imposed restrictions." Morrissey adds: "I had been in Los Angeles for seven years which is a very frightening city. People are very careful of what they do. You don't really walk through the streets, you can't walk among people. It is a very structured city. Here I felt I was among people, I was in a whirlwind of heartfelt emotions. Some nights are very busy, but some nights are empty and it is very safe." |
15/03/2006 - Morrissey, tu vuo' fa' o' romano...
Ok, il nuovo album è stato registrato a Roma ed è intriso di "romanità". Assistiamo, da italiani e romani, estasiati e divertiti alla nuova passione di Morrissey! Ma non possiamo non notare qualche piccola caduta di stile, forse dovuta alla lingua italiana (difficile per gli anglofoni). In primis, la copertina dell'album riporta sotto il titolo "Registrato e Mescolato a Roma Estate". Difficile persino commentare... In secundis, il modo in cui in "You Have Killed Me" Morrissey pronuncia "Accattone" e poi "Piazza Cavour" per far rima con "What's my life for?". Infine all'inizio del video di "You Have Killed Me" un presentatore francamente impresentabile introduce il brano con una frase che più banale non si può e pronunciando distintamente "Morrisey"... ma forse anche lui fa parte dell'ironia complessiva del video.
Morrissey the Roman...
So the new album has been recorded in Rome and is full of roman references. We watch, as Italians and Romans, ecstatically and amused to Morrissey's new passion! But then again we notice some little grammar mistakes, maybe because Italian is not so easy (and difficult for English speakers). First, the sleeve contains the phrase "Registrato e Mescolato a Roma Estate" (literally "recorded and BLENDED in Rome Summer", as if it was made of ingredients blended together, the correct term being "MIXATO"). We all know the album was recorded and mixed during Fall 2005 not Summer... Second, the way Morrissey pronounces "Accattone" and "Piazza Cavour" in YHKM. Last but not least, the frankly "unpresentable" presenter at the beginning of the YHKM video, who also badly introduces Morrissey calling him "Morrisey"... but maybe he's part of the video irony. |

05/03/2006 - Morrissey: "Voglio vivere a Roma."
In una recente intervista apparsa su XL di marzo, Morrissey esprime tutto il suo amore per la sua nuova scoperta: Roma. "Voglio vivere a Roma e tra i vostri cantanti amo Gigliola Cinquetti." E' stata una folgorazione per l'ex-cantante degli Smiths, che cerca casa nella capitale dopo averla scelta per registrare il nuovo album, intriso di simboli e personaggi romani ed italiani.
Morrissey says: "I want to live in Rome."
Recently in an interview appeared in the Italian magazine "XL", Morrissey tells us all his love for his new discover: Rome. "I want to live in Rome and among Italian singers my favourite is Gigliola Cinquetti." It was a revelation for the ex-singer of The Smiths: he is currently house-seeking in Rome, after he decided to record there his new album, full of Italian and Roman symbols and characters.

"Zero punti per Morrissey" - A Roma Morrissey ha registrato il video per il suo nuovo e lungamente atteso singolo 'You Have Killed Me' che uscirà il prossimo 27 marzo in Europa. Il video è una satira sulla gara canora dell'Eurovisione, della quale Morrissey è una specie di esperto: 'L'idea è venuta vedendo le serate dal 1969 al 1974,' ha riferito alla rivista NME, 'sulle quali potrei andare a Mastermind (un quiz televisivo per cervelloni, NdT)'. Morrissey si sta ora concentrando nella preparazione del suo imminente tour britannico, che lo vedrà esibirsi in molte città del paese, con ben 4 concerti nella nativa ed amata Manchester.

"Nul Points For Morrissey" - While in Rome, morrissey recorded the video for his long-awaited comeback single, 'You Have Killed Me' which is out on March 27. The video is a satire on the Eurovision Song contest, of which the Mozfather is something of an expert: 'The idea came from the Eurovision Song Contests from 1969 to 1974,' he told NME, 'on which I could sit for Mastermind'. Morrissey is now concentrating on preparing for his forthcoming UK tour, which will visit towns across the country, with 4 gigs in his native and beloved Manchester. |

Nel primo si notano diversi riferimenti alla città di Roma e ad alcuni grandi artisti italiani (Pier Paolo Pasolini, Luchino Visconti, la Magnani). Nel secondo si fanno sentire i violini del Maestro Ennio Morricone ed il senso religioso di Morrissey riguardo la propria sessualità.

Il nuovo singolo "You Have Killed Me" sarà pubblicato il prossimo 27 marzo nel Regno Unito, accompagnato dai b-side "Good Looking Man About Town", "I Knew I Was Next" ed una cover di "Human Being" dei New York Dolls. Il tour britannico comincerà a partire dalla pubblicazione dell'album e toccherà i 30 concerti in altrettante città.
